Performance on 3: A Glimmer in the Age of Darkness \ Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3 \ Royal Scottish National Orchestra \ BBC Radio 3

Posted on March 1, 2010

Radio 3’s Performance on 3 on Monday 1 March 2010 featured a concert recorded seven days before given by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra conducted by Stephane Deneve.

The limelight was shared between a bristling performance of Beethoven’s 3rd piano concerto by soloist Nikolai Lugansky and a work written for the RSNO by composer Guillame Connesson.

In A Glimmer in the Age of Darkness, listeners are treated to a one movement twenty minute piece depicting a far-off point in time and space. In this seemingly perpetual state of impending musical resolution, Connesson’s pseudo tone poem showed influences of Richard Strauss, late Schoenberg and even the pastoral idyll Delius frequently served up for his audiences.

The result was a scene in which anyone’s inner child would feel comfortable exploring the far reaches of the universe fuelled by the thrill of childlike inquisitiveness.
